Confused

“Is this the person you wanted to invite over for Christmas dinner, Papa? Is he the man you wanted to introduce to me? That diamond in the rough you were always going on and on about? Hey, you! You better be listening.” She glared at me with narrowed eyes, contempt displayed clear as day with her familiar features. “After everything I had heard about you from Papa and Hortus, I was honestly excited to finally meet you. Now, I see that they were mistaken in their impression of you. That I was mistaken for expecting more. I should’ve just let you drown and let my stupid hopes live on.”

She turned on a dime and left, leaving behind a room filled with a tense silence. My third visitor, a delinquent-looking youth leaning against the door frame, scoffed. “Félicitations.”

I laughed mirthlessly. “You wanna let me in on what you’ve been telling her about me?”
