Emptiness

The first time I saw God was at the beach. Out in front of five-year-old me, the vast horizon played matchmaker to the clear sky and the shimmering waters. The warmth of the sand under my feet, the call of seagulls in the distance, and the sharp smell of seas all faded away as I fell silent before the sight of endless blue. While Papa unloaded the family car, Mama came over behind me and ruffled my hair.

"Isn't it beautiful, dear?"

I nodded. "Mama, how did God make this?"

"I don't know, sweetie. It was before He created Adam and Eve."

"Father Allen said that He created the skies on the second day. And the oceans on the third."

"That's right. What a smart young girl."
