Etymology

“Spirit” is the conventional/modern translation of רוח (ruaḥ), as in “team spirit,” but literally רוח means “wind” and refers to the pervasive animating force. נשמה (neshamah) refers to the more individuated “soul” and shares the root of “breath” with “spirit,” so I like it.
