Irreplaceable

GALE
So then, are you an artist, too?

SELENE
I am.

The attractive curator closed her eyes, then opened them and smiled before she spoke.

SELENE
A curator. I'll introduce myself:
My name is Selene Bauman, with an S.

GALE
Gale Jones. Nice to meet you, Selene with an S.
Diana is your Starbucks name, I see?

With a start, Selene looked where my finger was pointing. She saw the name on her coffee, then smiled wryly.

SELENE
Ah, yes. I hate it when they write my name wrong.
I love Céline Dion, I really do!
But don’t give me her name! I have my own!

GALE
It must be even worse in Montreal.

SELENE
Truly a trek through enemy territory.
I end up being Diana more than I’d like.
But for the time I’m here in Montreal,
I’ll be Selene when I come here for coffee.
Remember, with an S, not with a C!

GALE
Got it. Spelled like the goddess of the moon?

SELENE
My, my. You know your Greek mythology.
The final e is not so silent in Greek,
but I don't mind my parents' ignorance.
