Isn't it funny how the books one reads always slots into who they are at that point in time? The stories we take away start to change how we see the world, and so change the world itself. My favorite books all end up being the ones that click the best in the moment, and Murakami's books have a lot of surface geography for attaching to, mostly because he goes to such weird places sometimes.
