Tainted
Bienvenue au Vieux-Port de Montréal.
After years of practice with Louise,
my shaky accent still displeased me greatly.
I saluted a statue of a cross-armed man
on a pedestal — the John Young Monument,
which had not been there seven years before —
then passed by and continued leisurely.
The historic Old Port of Montreal.
Stretching along the Saint Lawrence River for
over two kilometers along its shore,
the former trading post for French fur traders
retired in ’76 when a newer section,
the Port of Montreal downstream to the east,
took over all commercial operations.
The Old Port became a major tourist attraction,
thanks to its timely redevelopment
into a hub of culture and recreation.
Such was the history of my favorite place,
the place where I had found her then lost her again.
